Dinner @ Kam Fook, March 2010

We don't really need much excuse to go out to have dinner with my parents - they pick out some interesting places for Chinese food, and we're generally up for trying something new (:

Kam Fook has a few locations - a couple in Sydney, and this one in a new part of Westfield Doncaster Shoppingtown.  I hadn't been to this shopping centre in at least ... 10 years.  That kind of makes me feel a bit old!  There's a whole new section that has opened up here, full of restaurants and cafes, all near the entrance to a rooftop carpark.  It kind of makes it feel like a very covered restaurant street crossed with an airport.  Which probably doesn't make sense to anyone.

One of the different things about Kam Fook is that they offer different set menus for each night of the week.  Mum and Dad were keen to try the set menus, but hadn't had much opportunity because they have a minimum 4 person table requirement.

Anyways, pics of food after the jump (:

Dinner @ Golden Dragon Palace, February 2010

We had a kind of last-minute (visiting relos of relos) CNY dinner at Golden Dragon Palace on the first Monday during the Chinese New Year festivities, and we were there again on the middle Sunday, with a mostly different group of people.  Mum and Dad decided not to go for the CNY-themed dinner again for the Sunday, because they'd had quite a few of these themed dinners in the last week (seeing as they were definitely in CNY dinner mode!), so the pics for this dinner were more from the standard menu at Golden Dragon Palace.  Anyways, bunches of pics, after the jump (:

Yum Cha @ Superstars, Australia Day 2010

We went out to Yum Cha lunch on Australia Day, with Po-Po, and Goong-Goong, and Stirfry Ninja.  This came about because the previous week, Decay sent me a link to a review of a bunch of yum cha places, and when I sent that over to Stirfry while wondering out loud in gchat whether they were up for some yum cha on the public holiday, Mum rang back, Decay answered the phone, and was met with a question - whether we had any specific places in mind for this yum cha.  We generally trust Mum and Dad's judgement - they seem to have their ears to the ground on all things related to delicious Chinese food, but after a bit of ringing around of places Mum wanted to try, they either didn't offer yum cha, or weren't open on the Tuesday.  Which is a roundabout way of explaining how we ended up at Superstars again.  I think X's first experience of yum cha was at Superstars, and he would've been maybe 6 weeks old?

Anyways, pics after the jump - it's only taken me about 4 days since I started typing this, to actually finish it!

Dinner @ Jimmy Leung's Kitchen, January 2010

A couple of weekends ago, we went to dinner with my parents (Po-Po and Goong-Goong to X) and brother (Uncle Stirfry to X), at Jimmy Leung's Kitchen in Doncaster East.  I think the reason for going out to dinner was that my parents hadn't worked out what they were going to do for dinner, and they'd rung us anyways to ask about something completely unrelated to dinner.  We're generally up for some dinnery action together!

Birthday Dinner Shenanigans @ David's

It happened to be my birthday yesterday, and it also happened to be one that was specifically a multiple of 10, so Decay asked me to not make any plans for the day, and to choose a place for dinner with friends.  Given that we were going to have a fairly large group of people (20, including a couple of toddlery rapscallions and a not-quite-2-week-old), I figured something Chinese-ish would probably work.  So ... a booking was made for the lot of us at David's Restaurant, and after a morning at a day spa, lunch at a Japanese restaurant (although our sentimental first choice was closed), an afternoon nap (!), made our way to the restaurant (passing a cop car that got itself smashed through the window of Rebel...!), and got some food infront of us!

Pics of food (a bit blurry - proofing on a point-and-shoot in dim lighting when I insist on turning off the flash and using the macro mode, is kind of ... difficult), and possibly some commentary, after the cut:

Bar Bosh

Last Thursday night, we decided to go out for a bite to eat.  We'd been to Bar Bosh previously, but that was definitely pre-X days, but figured that it was worth a shot to try again.  We were sat down inside, X was provided with your standard-issue Ikea high chair, and we got to ordering.  Some garlic bread to start, a beer (Classic Blonde?) for Decay, and a reasonably put together lemon lime and bitters for Droidy.  X brought his own water, and a spoon for himself too.

X motored through a reasonable amount of the garlic bread, which appeared to be some turkish bread scattered over with whole peeled roasted cloves of garlic and warmed through.  Very tasty, with melty sweet garlic.  We didn't give X an entire clove of roasted garlic to eat, but he would've had a little on the bread.  It appears that the softer insides were X's favourite part of the bread.

For mains, Decay had some meatballs with tomato sauce, and Droidy had the lamb tagine with pumpkin.  X had a bit of everything, eating both off the spoon and with his hands.  The lamb was cooked to falling apart, and the vegetables (pumpkin, carrot, celery) had all absorbed the flavours of the spices. The meatballs looked pretty good too, Decay and X seemed to enjoy them!

X was a lovely dining companion for the evening - happy to sit and eat, and people-watch between the garlic bread and mains.  The only time he yelped was when his fingers were accidentally jammed between the high chair and the table.

Happy Birthday, Goong-Goong!

For as long as I can remember, we never really celebrated Mum and Dad's birthdays during the year.  I knew that the birth dates on various pieces of paper weren't actually the right date, and so we just didn't know when birthdays actually happened.   Anyways, Dad's dad (my Yeh-Yeh) kept a book with the birthdates of all his descendents, and when Mum and Dad and Stirfry made the trip to Vancouver for Yeh-Yeh's funeral, lots of things were uncovered, including this book, and in it was Dad's actual birthday!  So, in celebration of the fact that Dad actually has a real and proper birthday, we all went out to dinner at Golden Dragon Palace - and mum brought along a cake to have as well!

Dinner @ David's Restaurant, Prahran

Decay's mum (Gran, from X's perspective) wanted to go out to dinner for Decay's birthday. So, last Saturday, we went to David's Restaurant in Prahran for some Northern Chinese foodage.  We also had DKtE, Stirfry Ninja, and my parents along for the fooding.

We pre-advised that we'd need a high-chair, so X got to sit on one of those chairs that slings onto an adult chair, with straps to hold him in.  He was pretty happy with the arrangement for the most part, but understandably got a bit bored when there wasn't anything to do (well, mostly eat).

Guarana drink

Guarana drink

So, because a box of Brazilian Pudding Pocky made its way to a workmate in a branch office, a couple of cans of this Guarana drink made its way to my desk.  I finally remembered to bring it home and give it decent time in the fridge to cool down, and cracked it open to try yesterday afternoon.   It tastes kind of like ... a not as sweet kind of creamy soda.   Quite refreshing, and the contents of the can was finished pretty quickly (although, one of the things I seem to now be able to do is finish my glass of drink (non-alcoholic) far quicker than I used to manage - not sure why!).  I let my fingers do the googling, and found out that the fruit of the guarana plant kind of looks like eyeballs when you split them open.

Out for dinner with X and L

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Last Sunday afternoon, Decay suggested that we go out for dinner for a change .  So we also rang to see if S and G and L might want to join us.  S wasn't feeling the best, so we decided to chuck two car seats in the back of the ShoutyTiger, and pick up G and L.  For the record, one Droidy will fit between two car seats, X on one side, L on the other.  Just so you know, in case we have to work out how many elephants will fit in a Volkswagen Beetle (or Golf, in this case).

We ended up at the local Hog's Breath Cafe, in part because we figured they'd be the best chance to get two high chairs, and the ambience was noisy enough to account for a couple of young sirs.  These two were kept mildly entertained by paper (for both of them) and a bucket of crayons (for L), while we ordered and waited for the food to arrive.

X and L at Hog's Breath Cafe

So, after all that, what did we have?  G had the Chicken Dijonnaise and a mug of Broccoli Parmesan soup, Decay had the 'lite' serving of the Blackened Prime Rib, I had a Grilled steak sandwich and a mug of the soup as well, and X and L shared with us.  G and I went with Lemon Lime and Bitters for drinks, and Decay asked for a beer.  Didn't get to specify what kind of beer, but it turned up, and Decay's well-informed tastebuds tell us it was Carlton Draught.   In case anyone else ever ends up here and asks for a beer, but doesn't get to specify what kind of beer they'd like.

The food was food, L ate a variety of vegetables from G's plate, and asked for lots of chippies, X had some chippies (they were curly!), gummed up a bit of the steak from my steak sandwich, had some bread, and they both had some of the broccoli parmesan soup (once it had cooled down enough).

Now that we've tried this, it's not ridiculously daunting to be going out for dinner with two kidlings, it probably helps to choose places that aren't super uptight, but at least it felt like we were a step or two up from eating at McD's or someting!
