Dinner on Saturday night in Foster

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
We were visiting X's Gran last weekend, and we went out for dinner at the recently-changed-hands cafe (36 Main St, Foster VIC for those wondering).  It was pretty quiet, looked like we were going to be the only table for the night until a couple that had decided the pub was too full, sat down for the evening.

Menu was a mix of homestyle cooking, and cafe standards (pasta, quiche, all day breakfast).

We had

  • Roast Duckling, with cabbage braised with pear cider
  • Transylvanian Cabbage Rolls, served with salad
  • Beef Casserole (kind of like a goulash but not all broken up?), also served with salad and polenta
  • Spaghetti Carbonara
X got his own little serve of Penne Bolognese, which he demolished with much gusto.  Gran's Transylvanian Cabbage rolls were declared delicious, different to the ones she had made by a previous workmate in that the sauce that the rolls were cooked in, wasn't thickened in this version.  The Beef casserole was slightly spicy, but the meat was fork-tender, and didn't really need a knife to help it on its way. The Roast Duckling was tasty too, if perhaps a little too spiced - this probably wouldn't have been a problem if it wasn't a half-duckling serve, but a quarter, or just a breast fillet.  The braised cabbage that came with this was red, and declared delicious.  You can't really go that wrong with Spaghetti Carbonara, I mean, it had bacon in it, and everything goes better with bacon, right?

It was a lovely quiet place and a nice change from the other options in town.  Hopefully we'll get to go back and try out more of the homestyle offerings!

Fish and Chips at Port Albert

Chip Connoisseur

A couple of weekends back, we took a trip to visit Gran, and drive to Port Albert for some lunch.  We've been here a few times, and the fish and chips we've had each time has been some tasty stuff.  The place has been done up a fair bit since we were here last time - they've completely re-done the building the fish and chips place was, and added a higher-end restaurant on the site next it, although apparently both the restaurant and the fish and chips are coming out of the same kitchen, just that one has inside and sheltered deck seating, and the other you're left to fend for yourself.

I can't say I've got any pictures of the actual food - it all got eaten up pretty quick smart before I thought to snap a pic, but at least I have pics of X enjoying chips! Clicking through will get you some pics of the view we had while enjoying our lunch (:
