Birthday Dinner Shenanigans @ David's

It happened to be my birthday yesterday, and it also happened to be one that was specifically a multiple of 10, so Decay asked me to not make any plans for the day, and to choose a place for dinner with friends.  Given that we were going to have a fairly large group of people (20, including a couple of toddlery rapscallions and a not-quite-2-week-old), I figured something Chinese-ish would probably work.  So ... a booking was made for the lot of us at David's Restaurant, and after a morning at a day spa, lunch at a Japanese restaurant (although our sentimental first choice was closed), an afternoon nap (!), made our way to the restaurant (passing a cop car that got itself smashed through the window of Rebel...!), and got some food infront of us!

Pics of food (a bit blurry - proofing on a point-and-shoot in dim lighting when I insist on turning off the flash and using the macro mode, is kind of ... difficult), and possibly some commentary, after the cut:

Blueberry and Citrus Teacake

Blueberry and Lemon Teacake

I remembered to snap a photo late yesterday afternoon, when there was maybe one third of the loaf left - must've been tasty!  Decay had gone with Lumpy to test drive cars that Lumpy had his eye on, X had gone for his middle of the day nap, so I did what I'd normally do given a quiet house - bake!   This is the other recipe I had bookmarked when I was looking for something blueberryish to bake - it's a doddle to throw together, and given how quickly the slices have been disappearing, quite yummy as well.  I halved the recipe I found, because I only have the one loaf tin, and I also threw in all the frozen blueberries we had left, which ended up being 1.5 times what was asked for ... which was a lot!   Not sure what can be done about the sinking blueberries in the cake batter though - gravity in the face of a batter first being less solid while heating through at the start was always going to drag the blueberries downwards....

Dark Chocolate and Hazelnut Bites

Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Bites

While I was browsing about for recipes, I found that I kept looking for recipes where the picture was of icing sugar-covered cookies, with slightly cracked tops, which I have found are known as crinkle cookies in some parts, crackle cookies in others, possibly also some snowball-referencing names too. I've been doing a fair amount of cookie freezer stash building in the last couple of weeks, and I'm thinking these will join the Christmas lineup, because chocolate + hazelnut = nutella?  I actually had a few recipes to choose from, but this one ended up being the one I chose because it had a different method to what I've previously tried, and that's always fun!  Having skimmed the recipe, I now realise that I left out both the baking powder (not much), and the salt (not much either), and seeing as I'm writing this while the batter/dough is chilling in the fridge, I've got no idea how this is going to turn out!

Update: Seeing as there's now a pic in this entry, I can say that leaving out the baking powder didn't cause a disastrous outcome.  A trayful was rolled and baked last night on Decay's request, and X was also quite partial to the little morsels.

Mango Teacake

Mango Teacake

X's Po-Po popped by last Wednesday with a whole bunch of mangoes for us to eat.  I thought having 7 mangoes in the house was going to be too many for us to get through in a reasonable time, so I went off on a search for a recipe to make use of them.  I didn't think eating 7 mangoes with X was going to be good for anyone, no matter how tasty mangoes are (:  The recipes I turned up were mostly of the sorbet (no icecream maker!) and fruit with meat (not really my cup of tea, hard to share with workmates, too!) options, but I found a recipe that otherwise looked like a normal cake recipe, but with some mango mixed through.  It's taken me until X's naptime today (sick day with X at home, after a weekend of up and down mild fever and super-clingy boy) to get to posting.
